Summer Reading List

May 17, 2019

Dear Parents,

We are looking forward to an exciting 2019 -2020 school year. Summer is here but learning must continue.  Students are required to read these three books over the summer:

Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary

Charlotte's Web by E. B. White

We will follow up with book reports or book clubs related to their readings at the beginning of school. The first book report will be due August 23, 2019, the second Friday of school, when they return.

The public library offers an excellent summer reading program, and we encourage you to use this program as a resource to meet the summer reading requirements. We recommend using the Jefferson County Library System.  Books can be purchased at a minimal price at 2nd & Charles in Hoover.

In addition, we expect incoming third graders to be fluent with multiplication facts through 20. This will be assessed at the beginning of the school year through timed tests. The facts will not be given in order, and they must be memorized with no counting on fingers or making marks. Multiplication facts ( 0-3) should be mastered with the same expectation. Included are fact families in addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. For additional practice, you may access these websites: Acellus, Classwork, Thinkcentral.com, Myon, and Multiplication.com. Our school website for future reference is www.westhillselementary.com.

Also, please remember the Parent Resource Center at the Bessemer Board of Education will be available during the summer.

A third grade supply list is attached.

Looking forward to teaching your child.
